Enrollment Status

  • Be a graduate student currently enrolled in a recognized degree-granting program at an accredited institution.
  • Have at least one full academic year remaining until the completion of your degree at the time the fellowship begins.

Degree Programs

Open to students pursuing a master’s, doctoral, or equivalent advanced degree in a scientific, technical, or interdisciplinary field relevant to the fellowship’s objectives.

Research Scope

  • Proposed research must exclusively focus on developing, validating, or implementing methodologies that reduce or replace the use of animals in research, testing, or education.
  • Projects involving any animal use—including refinement proposals—are not eligible for funding at this time.
  • Priority will be given to projects demonstrating significant potential to advance human-relevant, non-animal methodologies in areas such as:
    • Biomedical research
    • Toxicology and regulatory testing
    • Educational models or tools

Institutional Support

  • Applicants must secure the endorsement of a faculty advisor or principal investigator who will provide mentorship and institutional backing throughout the project.
  • The applicant must have access to the institutional resources (e.g., lab space, equipment), and approvals required to complete the proposed research.

Commitment to Ethical Innovation

  • Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to advancing research methodologies that do not use animal models and promote ethical scientific innovation.
  • Prior experience in non-animal research is encouraged but not required.

Geographic Scope

Applications are accepted from students at institutions in any country, provided the proposed research aligns with IFER’s mission and submission materials are in English.
